Having had to withdraw from the Wicklow Round this year at the end of May, the Morenic Trail was the only other UTMB 3 Pt Race that I could fit in this year. After the Wicklow Round it was time to get ready for the 5 day expedition Terrex Adventure race in Sterling at the end of August. Giving a month to recover for this one. A week in San Francisco with work meant flying home flying on Friday morning with little sleep and flying out that afternoon at 4:00pm. Arriving in Milan it took along time to pick up … Read the rest

12-06 WR Finish 02

The Wicklow Round had been lurking in the back of my mind for a number of years. Its something different, a challenge, not a race, an itch that needs to be scratched. These are the main elements which attracted me to the “The Round”. Only now did I consider myself equipped to take on the challenge. The experience gained over the last number of years through Adventure Racing, Mountain Marathons, Navigation Challenges and Orienteering led me to believe I had what was necessary. Thats the logic anyways… funny enough how it would turn out to be my first proper Ultra!… Read the rest

Myself and Karen always look forward to the Mournes. Its one of our favourite races. This year we were entered in the B class and determined to erase any memories of last years DNF. Karen has been training well of late but I haven’t been able to do a whole pile struggling with achiles tendonites since the Rotterdam marathon earlier this year. I still managed to complete the IMRA Nav Challenges which were great preparation for the Mournes.

Preparation
We have a few Mountain Marathons under our belt and we’ve learned alot each time. As always discussions of what gear … Read the rest

This was myself and Karens first year to do the LAMM. We had been looking forward to doing it for sometime especially after our experience on the Mourne 2 Day last year. We both knew the Scottish Highlands were going to be alot more difficult but we wern’t afraid to jump right in and “see what happens”.

Race Preparation
I had studied the maps from previous years LAMM’s and examined the route choices on RouteGadget of the top teams each year. I knew the nav was going to be very difficult. We both have a good level of fitness and … Read the rest

I better do another training update before I lose track! Training is starting to turn into a blur, there is so much going on these days so i’m a little short on detail.

Thursday 6th Lacken Kayaking (Richard, Finbar, Sean)
Another fine evening on the lake we did a little over two hours. Interestingly we were joined by Beth McCluskey this evening. She is gearing up for the West Wicklow Roar after her recent success with team AR Denny in Seans Total Experience Adventure Race. Best of luck!

Its great to be coming off the water after these sessions with … Read the rest

Circuit of Avonbeg Recce

The circuit is a new IMRA race being held for the first time this year. We all planned on giving it a shot as the route looked pretty epic. A recce would be required however. We didn’t get away until 3pm but the weather was good and we were in good spirits. Up the zig zags we went heading for the first checkpoint “the lake”. We made a mistake coming off the zig zags and ended up taking a path above the forest to the lake. The correct route into the forest would be marked on race day and correctly … Read the rest

It was probably sometime mid December  after had been a hectic year of Mountain Running and adventure racing (1ST Year AV racing for me and finbar) that we headed out on our 1st run. It was from Lough Tay to Johnny foxes. It was a windy day, a day I would forget the keys which meant we had to run back to the car , which added an additional 2-3km to what was planned to be a 21km run. Karen and I ran 25km that day and the i guess the Chaos stayed right up to the finish … Read the rest
